Cognizant
A large IT services company with a very big India workforce. Its entry-level hiring runs through the GenC programme, which Cognizant describes as designed to nurture and hire entry-level talent. Freshers go into application development, testing, support, data and cloud delivery work.
Cut-offs and test patterns change every hiring cycle. Treat this page as orientation and confirm the current cycle on their own careers site and with your placement cell.
1Cognizant eligibility criteria
Who can generally apply
- Cognizant's GenC programme in India is its named route for entry-level hiring.
- For the Analyst Trainee role, Cognizant has publicly stated eligibility in terms of a specific graduating year and a completed three-year full-time undergraduate degree, listing streams such as BCA, BSc, BA, BCom, BBA, BVoc and BMS.
- Engineering graduates are hired through GenC drives as well, generally into trainee engineering roles.
- Cognizant states publicly that its entry-level programme carries no bonds.
What you must confirm yourself
- The graduating years named on the official page move every cycle, and the degree list differs between the four-year engineering intake and the three-year undergraduate intake.
- Marks criteria and backlog rules are not published as a permanent standard. Read the drive notice or job posting for your own batch.
2Cognizant selection process
Stages, as Cognizant describes them
Cognizant publicly describes a five-step process:
- Application submission
- Initial screening
- Assessments, which Cognizant describes as covering communication, aptitude and technical skills
- Interviews, conducted virtually or in person
- Results notification
What candidates commonly report
Candidates commonly describe tiered GenC variants with different names and different bars, where the higher tiers require significantly stronger coding and carry a harder interview. The official GenC page checked for this entry described a single programme and did not name those tiers. So treat tier names you see on prep sites as candidate and aggregator language, not as Cognizant's published structure, and check what the current drive notice actually names.
Candidates also commonly report a technical interview followed by an HR interview, and in some drives a separate communication assessment. Round counts vary; Cognizant does not publish a fixed number.
3Cognizant syllabus: what to study
Aptitude
- Percentages, ratio and proportion, averages
- Profit and loss, interest
- Time and work, time speed and distance
- Number system, series, HCF and LCM
- Permutations, combinations, probability
- Data interpretation
Reasoning
- Puzzles, seating arrangements, ordering
- Coding and decoding, series, analogies
- Blood relations, direction sense
- Syllogisms, statement and conclusion
- Data sufficiency
Communication and English
Cognizant explicitly names communication as one of the things its assessments cover, so this is not optional padding.
- Reading comprehension
- Grammar, error spotting, sentence correction
- Vocabulary and word usage
- Spoken clarity and structure, and written email or paragraph composition
Programming and technical
- One language you are fluent in: C, C++, Java or Python
- Arrays, strings and string manipulation
- Loops, conditionals, functions, recursion
- Linked lists, stacks, queues, hash maps
- Trees and basic graph traversal for the stronger tracks
- Sorting, searching, and basic complexity reasoning
- Pseudocode reading and output prediction
- Object-oriented programming concepts with concrete examples
Applied fundamentals
- SQL, in real depth: select, where, joins, group by, having, aggregate functions, subqueries
- DBMS concepts: keys, normalisation, indexes, transactions and ACID
- Operating systems: processes and threads, scheduling, deadlock, memory
- Computer networks: TCP and UDP, HTTP, DNS, the layered model
- Software development lifecycle vocabulary and what Agile and Scrum mean in practice
- Your own projects, in specific detail
4How to prepare for Cognizant
If you have one to three years
- Learn SQL and DBMS properly. Services delivery is full of data work, and SQL is both testable and immediately useful. It is the highest return-per-hour subject on this list.
- Build the aptitude habit early and keep it consistent rather than intense.
- Take communication seriously, because Cognizant names it as an assessed area. Practise speaking about a technical topic for two minutes without notes.
- Get fluent in one language and solve problems on a timer.
- Learn to trace pseudocode on paper, which is a distinct skill from writing code.
- Build one or two projects that involve a database, since that is the shape of the work and gives you something concrete to discuss.
- Track the official Cognizant careers site for the drive notice for your batch, since programme names and eligible years change.
The honest caveat
Cognizant publishes its process shape, its no-bond position, and some role-specific eligibility. It does not publish a fixed test pattern, a fixed round count, or permanent marks criteria. The subject areas above are stable; everything numeric must be read from the live posting.
Practise for it
The rounds above are only worth knowing if you sit them once before the real thing.
