Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)
India's largest IT services employer and the single biggest recruiter of fresh engineering graduates. Most hiring runs through the TCS National Qualifier Test (NQT). New joiners typically go into application development, testing, support and infrastructure work on client accounts in banking, retail, telecom and manufacturing.
Cut-offs and test patterns change every hiring cycle. Treat this page as orientation and confirm the current cycle on their own careers site and with your placement cell.
1TCS eligibility criteria
Who can generally apply
- TCS iON describes the NQT as open to pre-final and final year students of any degree stream, to graduates within a stated range of passing years, and to working professionals with under two years of experience.
- The official NQT page also states an age band (a minimum and a maximum age at the time of the test).
- TCS runs several separate fresher drives alongside the main engineering intake, including programmes aimed at BSc graduates, BPS roles, MBA candidates, pharmacy graduates and MSc / MA Economics candidates. The eligible degrees depend on which drive you apply to.
What you must confirm yourself
- Marks cutoffs, backlog rules, education-gap rules and eligible passing years are not stable. They differ between cycles and between drives.
- Do not plan around a percentage figure you read on a coaching site. Open the official NQT page and the TCS NextStep portal for your own graduation year and read the criteria published there.
- Registration for the test and registration on the TCS hiring portal are separate steps in some cycles. Check which ones apply to you.
2TCS selection process
Stages
- Register on the TCS hiring portal and apply to the drive that matches your degree and passing year.
- Sit the NQT, a proctored online test. TCS iON officially describes the cognitive portion as covering Verbal Ability, Reasoning Ability and Numerical Ability, plus a psychometric assessment of workplace personality traits.
- Attend interviews if shortlisted.
- Offer, document verification and background check.
What the test looks like in practice
For IT roles, candidates commonly report a programming and coding portion in addition to the three cognitive sections, and a structure split into an easier foundation part and a harder advanced part that not everyone reaches. This split is widely described by candidates and prep sites; TCS does not publish it as a permanent fixed format, so treat it as a strong expectation rather than a guarantee.
Candidates also commonly report that performance sorts you into different role bands, referred to as Ninja, Digital and Prime, with the higher bands requiring stronger coding and a harder interview. Again: reported, not published as a fixed rule.
Interviews
Candidates commonly report a technical discussion, a managerial discussion and an HR conversation. These are sometimes separate rounds and sometimes a single panel on the same day. The number of rounds varies by cycle, by role band and by location. Do not assume a count.
3TCS syllabus: what to study
Quantitative and numerical ability
- Number system, divisibility rules, HCF and LCM, remainders
- Percentages, ratio and proportion, averages, mixtures and alligation
- Profit and loss, simple interest and compound interest
- Time and work, pipes and cisterns, time speed and distance, trains and boats
- Permutations, combinations and basic probability
- Elementary statistics: mean, median, mode
- Data interpretation from tables, bar charts, line charts and pie charts
- Basic mensuration and coordinate geometry
Reasoning ability
- Number series, letter series, analogies, odd one out
- Seating arrangements and grouping puzzles
- Blood relations, direction sense, coding and decoding
- Syllogisms, statement and conclusion, statement and assumption
- Data sufficiency
- Figural, visual and spatial reasoning
Verbal ability
- Reading comprehension, including inference questions rather than only fact-lookup
- Grammar: subject-verb agreement, tenses, prepositions, articles, modifiers
- Error spotting, sentence correction and sentence completion
- Para jumbles and paragraph ordering
- Vocabulary in context, one-word substitution
- Short written communication, such as composing an email from a set of given points
Programming and coding
- One language you are genuinely fluent in. C, C++, Java and Python are the usual choices. Fluency beats breadth here.
- Reading input from standard input and printing output in an exact format. Online judges mark on exact output, and this alone costs many candidates marks.
- Arrays, strings and string manipulation
- Loops, conditionals, functions, recursion
- Basic data structures: linked lists, stacks, queues, hash maps
- Sorting and searching, and being able to say roughly how expensive your solution is
- Reading and tracing pseudocode written in a C-like style
Core computer science, mainly for the interview
- Object-oriented programming: classes, inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation, abstraction
- DBMS: normalisation, keys, joins, and writing SQL queries by hand
- Operating systems: processes and threads, scheduling, deadlock, memory management
- Computer networks: the OSI and TCP/IP layers, TCP versus UDP, DNS, HTTP basics
- Your own projects, in real detail, including the parts that did not work
4How to prepare for TCS
If you have one to three years
- Start the aptitude habit early and keep it small. Twenty to thirty minutes a day for a year beats a panicked month in your final semester. Aptitude is what eliminates most candidates, and unlike talent it is entirely learnable.
- Pick one programming language in your first year and stay with it. Depth in one language is worth more than passing familiarity with three.
- Practise coding in a plain editor without autocomplete. Online tests give you a bare editor, and people who only ever code in a full IDE lose time on syntax.
- Solve with a timer from the beginning. These tests measure speed as much as ability, and speed only comes from repetition.
- Learn to handle standard input and output cleanly in your language. Format mistakes fail otherwise-correct solutions.
- Build two or three projects you can actually explain. One project you understand deeply is better than five you copied.
- Work on spoken and written English deliberately if it is not already comfortable. TCS assesses communication in the test and again in the interview.
- In your pre-final year, take full-length timed mock tests, not question-by-question practice. Sitting still and staying accurate for the full duration is a separate skill.
The honest caveat
The subject areas above are stable and safe to build a study plan around. Cutoffs, eligible batches, section counts and the current year's test layout are not. Check the official TCS pages for your own hiring cycle before you make any decision that depends on a specific number.
Practise for it
The rounds above are only worth knowing if you sit them once before the real thing.
